Commodore 128 Dual Monitor Demo (fwd)
« on: June 28, 2012, 03:01 PM »

Hi,

I did a Dual Monitor Demo in C128 Basic.

This demonstrates the capabilities of a C128 with both video signals connected to different monitors. It is written in basic and took about one day writing it on a real C128 (with a sticky space key). Since I'm not really a professional programmer, so don't expect too much if you analyze the source code. :D

The D64-Image if you want to run it in Vice:
http://c64.tin.at/c128-dual-demo.zip

The Youtube-Video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDhFfSjvEvQ
For impatient viewers: The most action starts about 1:35.

I don't know if there was any other dual monitor demo yet, so this might have been a world premier that has taken place on the Commodre Meeting in Graz, Austria last Friday! (With beamer and monitor.) ;)

Very impressive for a one day project!  You're a lot more skilled with PLAY than me.  Unless I translated some sheet music or copy it from a magazine article, my music always sounds terrible.

I like it when both screens are showing the road scrolling by.  Are the screens suppose to scroll in opposite directions (one up and one down)?  And then the cars start scrolling by too.  I was pleasantly supprised to see them on the VDC first, considering it doesn't have sprites!  That looks like a great premise for a game... especially because it worked so well in BASIC.  I imagine it would be awesome in ML.
I'm kupo for kupo nuts!

Very cool stuff, thanks for sharing.  I've never tried to use the VDC and VIC at the same time.
Cheers!  -=Maraud=-

Nice. But impressive? I don't think so.

If I remenber correctly, there have been some (very few) games using two screens. I'm working on games using both screens since two years now. I got lost in details. So much ideas no time to realize. It's terrible - no time for programming the C128 due to hanging around in other forums.  >:(

It's impressive in that it was done in one day and in BASIC.

hello wizard i m indeed from the netherlands and a big fan of the commodore 128
yesterday I came to the conclusion that it is actually possible to hook up 3 monitors for the rgbi (80 columns) the radio frequency (coax) port and the video port
you get from the rf port and the video port the same signal so on both screens the display is the same
only the 80 column (rgbi port) gives a different screen
do you know what i mean???
i also search for some books and software for my commodore 128 computer
anyone who has ???
greetings from frits
ps i c that you are in ameland the isles maybe if you have time over you can come to my house and visit me and u can also see what i got of computers
leeuwarden is not far away from ameland it is possible to step on a train in leeuwarden and go to amsterdam and fly of with plane so ameland and leeuwarden are not far from eachother maybe about 100 kilometer or so
so if u wish come and visit me i will be very curious to see you
so i think you should visit leeuwarden i can show you around
if needed you can sleep here also

Hi, fritsblasel, thank's for the invitation but (unfortunately) my holidays are over. I have had to leave Ameland on 12th of August :(

On my way back to Germany, I have been in Leeuwarden at high noon ;) Shortly before your posting ...

There should be some books available as PDF. Unfortunately I lost the links (but you may check this: http://www.bombjack.org/commodore/). Maybe I fould the links here or at Forum64.de (nice Forum but in German - not a problem for me).

Also for software this place here is a good start!

For fun, at today's FCUG meeting we tried the Dual Monitor Demo again, except this time we used the SuperCPU 128 at 20 MHz..  At 20 MHz., the 80-column side of the demo ran really fast!  :)  The cars zoomed by too fast!  :)  On the 40-column side, there was no speed-up or just a slight speed-up in what was displayed.  The same with the music... no speed-up or just a slight speed-up in tempo.

          Experimenting,
