Next FCUG meeting - Sunday, January 15

(1/1)

RobertB:
Happy New Year, all good C= and Ami fans!
The Fresno Commodore User Group has its next meeting from 11 a.m. to 1+ p.m., Sunday, January 15, at  --

          The Pizza Pit Restaurant
2705 N. Blackstone Ave. (corner of Blackstone and Princeton)
          Fresno, California

This month we dissect a RAMLink recently acquired from the C= collection of Chuck W. in Stockton.  We have a brief look at the follow-up Bil Herd video in which he discusses the Commodore 116.  Fingers crossed against Murphy's Law, we're going to run the new Media Player 128 (beta) and the new demo, Nothing Else Matters 128.  Once again the PAL CD32 returns with a big box of many CD32 discs, and the EasyFlash 1 for the C64 returns, too.
For discussion, we'll talk about the close of the Commodore Users Group of Kansas City, Lenard Roach's re-release of his book, "Run-Stop/Restore", and upcoming shows, Notacon 9 and the Vintage Computer Festival East.

          And more,
          Robert Bernardo

Hydrophilic:
Unortunately that's a bit too far away for me to attend, although I would be intersted in how MP128 performs with whatever hardware you use.  There is a confirmed bug with some REUs larger than 512K (almost gauranteed for 1M and 2M units) that I haven't had a chance to post a patch for (been busy with quarterly / end-of-year taxes ... yeah taxes!)

The audio files should play fine from most any device, but the videos may have trouble on NTSC systems (which I assume you will use).  The video 'Rockstar' may not play without skipping on NTSC unless you have a really fast device, like uIEC.  However "I love Rock 'n' Roll" should play fine from a 1581 or FD-2000 (it may have trouble with CMD-HD as it seems to be slower for some reason).

I've got about 2 dozen more music videos, but due to time and limited web space I haven't put them up.  But if you would like a few more for the demonstration, let me know your preference and I can get a few up by Saturday.

I'll have a report for you after the meeting.

Yes, we'll be using the club's flat, NTSC C128.

My SD2IEC and uIEC have not been flashed with the latest core yet, but we'll try out the demo anyway with them.  There is the club 1581, and I'll ask the treasurer to bring his CMD hard drive.

Thanks!  But I don't know what else you have available.

Hydrophilic:
I was hoping you would request something and then maybe I would have it or something similar.  Oh well, here are two videos that I re-compiled with a slightly lower bandwidth so they should run on NTSC and 1581.  First is Put a Ring on It (Single Ladies) by BeyoncĂ©.  It is grayscale and 16:9 aspect ratio.  This was included with the alpha release, but had wasn't centered (it is now).  The second is The Power of Goodbye by Madonna.  It is color / aqua-scale and is 4:3 aspect ratio.

You can run them from a hard drive, or copy them onto a 1581 using a program like c1541 included with VICE.  For that, use a command line like

--- Code: ---c1541 -format pwr-goodbye,rb d81 pwr-goodbye.d81 -attach pwr-goodbye.d81 -write pwr-goodbye.cif

--- End code ---
This example will create a D81 named pwr-goodbye.d81 and write (half) the file pwr-goodbye.cif onto it.  You'll get a warning message about disk space because the whole video won't fit on a d81, but MP128 will play whatever fits.

The Madonna video is interesting as it is seems to have been shot (or more likely post-processed) into 'aqua-scale' which is kind of like gray scale but with aqua-color hues.  It is not all blue/green however, as there are some reds etc that pop up from time to time.  I'll put up some screen shots later, but first I want to test tokra's VDC big char mode.

Later!

Edit
Attached two images from the aqua-scale video.  I find the color scheme rather interesting, but that probably has to do with my screen name Hydrophilic... it's not just a name, it's a psychosis!

Oh, that's what you mean.    How about something from Quarterflash, like "Harden My Heart", "Take Me to Heart", or "Walking on Ice"  They are all found on the Net in varying video quality.  Also, Walking on Ice has 1985 computer animation within its video!
I guess you have more time to get something ready.  At today's FCUG meeting, though we ran overtime 1 1/2 hours, we still didn't get to your Commodore 128 Media Player nor the Nothing Else Matters 128 demo.  So, these 128 items will be delayed until the February 19 meeting.

No worries.  I don't use VICE.

     Oh, no!  :)
