WANTED: Detailed C64 Japanese version keyboard layout
« on: October 03, 2011, 02:27 PM »
Hi!

I need to know Japanese keyboard layout of Commodore 64 Japanese version.

I found on web only VIC-1001 keyboard layout.

In VICE emulator I found differences between VIC-1001 vs C64.

So, I have VIC-1001 keyboard layout, but need C64 Japanese keyboard layout.

Please, if anybody can make detailed photos of keyboard or other picture format of full layout of C64 Japanese, help me!

You can add it to this topic or email me at miiro79[at]gmail.com

Many many thanks.

Check out this page. The kernel ROM file has a lot of changes to the original one, and the available memory is reduced to 36863 bytes, so it has 2048 bytes memory less. Has anyone an idea why this happens? My first thought would be a RAM copy of the charset somewhere, without reverse characters.

Edit: I compared the contents of two VICE snapshot files with original kernel and japanese kernel directly after a reset. There are no major differences in the empty RAM. I'm still using the original Basic ROM.

Hi!

Thank you, but ROM file helps not. It's only charset and also KERNAL.

Keyboard layout is other than charset... e.g. char "@" is in CBM "@" and in Japanese e.g. "\"

But when you press key @, it shows @...

Well, if you need a picture of the japanese keyboard layout, this is also on this page. You get parts the original graphics charset like on the original C64 in standard mode, if you press C=Shift to get the alternate charset, you get japanese characters by holding the Commodore key. That's why the japanese version has a C=LOCK key. The text is always in upper chars, no matter which charset is selected. The font looks like the ASCII/DIN font in international C128's. I attached a screenshot from the Mac-VICE with the characters I could get. The upper line is normal, the lower is pressed with C=.

It would still be interesting why the japanese version has 2K less memory.

Yes, it may be possible that there are more characters. The keyboard layout of emulators is often a problem, the 'Arrow up' is on F10 here, but also on Page Up. If I select the germen VICE keymap the @ isn't available at all.

Hi!

I know that's not 100% sure. But I was looking on photo of VIC-1001 keyboard and C64 Japanese keyboard, but they were low quality to define characters exactly.

But when I was looking on, I found 4 characters which were not good to recognize.

So, I created VICE C64 Japanese and tried all possible combinations. And the characters like on photo were shown...

About VICE keyboard mapping: It's very easy to modify everything. I did for my C128 VICE much better keyboard than standard...

Hi!

So, I found different layout for Commodore computers.

Layout of C64 Japanese is other than VIC-1001 (Japanese).

Look in attachment - I found it in manual of VIC-1001.
