Noob guide to JiffyDOS on a 128DCR?
« on: September 10, 2011, 09:56 PM »
Is there a guide to buying and installing JiffyDOS on a 128DCR?

I see that go4retro sells a 'JiffyDOS ROM Overlay IC' with a prewired switch, and several JiffyDOS ROM firmware sets.

I presume I'd need the hardware and the 128DCR ROM set, but how do I program the chip? Do I need an eprom burner?

The JiffyDOS manuals and such I've been able to find are for the 'flat' 128, and the original chips. I've come across mentions that the 128D and DCR need a different procedure, but not what that procedure is.

Halp!

No, you get two replacement ROM's, one for the kernel ROM and the 1571 DCR ROM.

But why buy this stuff? Ask some guy in the forum who could burn these ROMs, that's much cheaper. This $%§/&?!! guy Maurice Randall shouldn't earn money with CMD stuff. A friend here in Germany bought JiffyDOS for several computers, a SuperMMU 128 and some other stuff and got it defective. He sended it back - and never heard anything from him. No response for mails. After a longer time he tried it again using another mail address and like being a new customer, he got a reply. As he told him who he was, the line was dead again. Getting money, yes, but support, no. This is Maurice Randall.

I got my Eproms burned from a friend, as I didn't have an Eprom programmer, and I got them always with a kernel switch Commodore/JiffyDOS. That's probably the switch you see on the photo.

I got my jiffydos chips from the noew go4retro for my 128dcr. installation is a breeze and works fantastic. on mine, the switch is a 3 way switch and in one position the screen comes on with garbage, the other two positions enable/disable jiffydos speedup, so I dont know what the third position is supposed to be.

since I disabled the internal drive (cut the trace) because I have the a u1541-ii cartridge, I should have got the rom image to put on there instead of the 1571 chip.

I think it came (not 100% sure from memory) with a printout on how to install in a 128dcr. I dont recall tho.

the c128dcr chip contains both the c128 and c64 jiffydos kernels roms in one single chip.

Yeah, Jiffydos is now available legally now, and Jim Brain stands behind his products. I've bought a couple of uiec's, a zoom floppy, jiffy dos for the 64, and some jiffy licences only. He always replies quickly to problems and even helped me out quite a but when I was building a wiport wireless adapter for the commodore.
Later,

basicwayne on eBay is also licensed for JiffyDOS ROMs.  Here is the link to his C128D version -

I bought 3 pos switches in case I later start offering a JD+ option on the same FLASH (it has room).

I'd really rather you not do that.  Maurice does not receive any funds from current JD sales.  Randall licensed the code from CMD (now Mark Fellows) and is no longer licensed.

As Robert notes, Wayne Dosen (basicwayne) also licenses the ROMs.  His licensing also does not net MR any funds.
