DALLAS SmartWatch RTC - How to use it?
« on: April 15, 2011, 10:46 PM »
Hi!

I bought Dallas SmartWatch DS1216E RTC socket with chip...

It is RTC.

It has to be inserted into any socket (28-pin) and to the socket insert chip which was there.

The main Q: To which socket insert DS1216E?

I think it can be KERNAL128, KERNAL64 or U36 or so... (I want to use it on C128 flat).

In attachment is photo of it.

Many thanks for every reply!

According to Maxim's data sheet, the DS1216E can be plugged into any 28 pin JEDEC ROM socket.  The empty ROM socket on the C-128's motherboard qualifies as a JEDEC ROM socket.  Whether the SmartWatch will work in that socket is another question.

Try reading the data sheet, Miro, before asking a lot of obvious questions.  The data sheet tells you everything you need to know to use the SmartWatch.

OK, thank you for data sheet.

Now I have only one simple stupid Q (SSQ):

When I insert DS1216E to U36 will my EPROM, which will be inserted into DS1216E socket, work?

It's only for "TO BE SURE"

I'm not good in HW... that's truth.

Many thanks.

I've been reading up on this chip and it's quite nifty. There's drivers for it for the Atari ST, Apple II and TRS-80. The CMD-FD-2000 uses one too.

I suppose the best place for it for now on a C128 would be the option ROM socket, as I don't think any of the custom kernals out there (or anything else for that matter besides the FD-2000) has support for it. In other words, the ROM socket it needs to live in is determined by the driver, and since there's no driver...

Hi, I am a new member, just re-entering CBM arena after about a dozen years. About the Dallas Smart Watch. I see it can be installed in the ROM on a flat 128. Any idea if the GEOS drivers from the original joy-port model can be patched to work? Has anybody already done this?
