Hi!


I'm owner of C1581 and want to buy JiffyDOS for this diskdrive.
But first I have some Q:


Is needs something to soldering? (I'm electronic anti-talent and don't have micro-solder...)
I need it only if I'm using C128 in C64 mode, has JiffyDOS any switcher to turn it on/off?


In attachment is scan of recension from Czech magazine FUN with Commodore, so you can see why I want JiffyDOS only for C64 mode.

     In the 1581, you will have to unsolder the original kernal chip, solder in a socket, and then plug in the JiffyDOS chip into that socket.

     The JiffyDOS in the 1581 does not need a switch, because it will automatically "know" if the computer is in C128 or a C64 mode.  The JiffyDOS in the C128 only has a switch to toggle between JiffyDOS kernal and the original kernal.  It is not a switch to toggle between C128 mode and C64 mode.

I've been thinking about getting a 1581 for a while but you say have to (un)solder ROM ?  It is not in a socket already?  Quite unlike Vic20/Plus4/C64/C128/C1541/C1571 ROMs.  I think I will stick with uIEC if the 1581 wants to be such a pain in rump!

Honestly, prior to getting my uIEC I used 1581 the most.  Now, I use the uIEC the most and 1581 the least.  My 1581 got used a lot because of the D1581 program for DOS that would write a 1581 disk in a few seconds but now that SD cards have taken over my sneakernet I've found little use for the 1581 other than the cool sounds it makes when the IEC bus gets reset.  Once I get CBM-Command finished I'll probably start dumping all my 1581 disks to my uIEC.

Most 1581 units have the ROM socketed.  It should be a quick pull and replace.  No switch.

Last Q is to 64KERNAL.
Jim Brains offers two types of 64KERNAL: C64 and C64(New Style)C64C.

So, if I have C128 (standard, 1985) and want to use JiffyDOS only in C64 mode which type to order?

I'm owner of two C128. One is standard C128 and second is C128DCR.

I calculated some prices and...

If I select JiffyDOS 64KERNAL it is 20,00USD.
If I select for C128 it is 35,00USD
If I select for C128DCR and 1571DCR it is 55,00USD

Mean it that C128(DCR) has incl. 64KERNAL or I must to buy 2x 64KERNALs separately?

The C128D JD comes with a ROM for the C128/64 kernal (in one ROM) and one 1571d ROM.  JD works in 128 mode & 64 mode without needing anything else.

The C128DCR is a single ROM, but it contains the 64 and 128 KERNALs.
The C128 is a 2 ROM set (It's a package containing the C64C ROM and a C128 mode ROM).

Normally, we don't sell partials, but if you want just a 64 ROM for the C128, order a C64C JD ROM (that's what the C128 uses).  If you want the C128DCR KERNAL only, you'll need to order a C128 ROM set (to charge the right price) and note you want just the C128DCR KERNAL in the comments of your order.

FYI, my 1581 came also with the ROM in a socket.  I had to disassemble the drive somewhat but all in all, it was a very painless procedure.

I have internal C1571 selected as device #10 and really last time I'm using C1581 and 1541Ultimate. Also I'm user of 64HDD Pro - for this solution is missing any faster driver... in C128 mode (for C64 mode I have PWR/Link which R/W 50 times faster...)


I'm hopeless that Nick Coplin will create any speedloader for C128 mode...

Take a look at the 64HDD Professional page. In 64HDD Professional C128 there is both a standard serial speedloader (burst mode) and support for Pwr-Loader. It's been available for several years.

Yes, page has new design... but there's nothing new - and the cartidges, exactly PWR/Link works not in C128 mode...


As is shown there, every cartridge has 64.B.O.S. - so always boots to C64 mode.
Also, I tried Z-Loader for C128 and never was working.


Or is it my big mistake and these speedloaders (except PWR/Link) are working in C128 mode?
If you can, write to me more...

I used to own a copy of 64HDD Professional but not the C128 version, so I have no experience with it myself. But it does say on the website that Pwr-Loader works with the C128.
