I'm looking for a collection of programs for the C128 called "The Compleat Lee O.", which was mentioned in issue 14 of C= Hacking. It's described as a "collection of programs submitted to Loadstar to be put out on their 128 Loadstar disks. The programmer, Leo O. Clinton, tried to help fill the barren field of 80 column programming."

The program I'm specifically looking for from that disk is called "auto expense". If anyone knows where I can get "The Compleat Lee O." or just the program called "Auto Expense", I'd appreciate the help. My searches on the Internet have turned up nothing, and this doesn't appear to be included in "Loadstar Compleat".

Andrew, have you directly contacted Dave Moorman, current editor of Loadstar, or Fender Tucker, former editor of Loadstar?

No, I haven't... Since it's a collection of C128 programs, I was hoping that someone here would have it. It isn't mentioned anywhere on Fender's Loadstar Compleat website. I'll try sending Dave Moorman an e-mail and see if he knows anything about it...

Well, nevermind that I don't have his phone number, it really isn't THAT urgent. I just thought it'd be cool to track my gas mileage on my C128.

Come to think of it, if anyone knows of another gas mileage tracking program for either the C64 or C128, please let me know. I did some searching, and the reference to this program was the only one I could find. But I imagine there were probably others...

Couldn't you do the same thing with a C= database or a spreadsheet?

Of course, but finding the description for this program piqued my interest. It made me wonder what sort of "features" were written into the program. Or is it just a simple spreadsheet program? And it was written for the C128, so it must be really special.

O.K., I just got off the phone with Dave Moorman of Loadstar. We had a nice conversation that spanned several subjects, like Commodore shows, DotBasic, Commodore traveling, hardware, Loadstar, and the Compleat Lee O.. As to the last one, he doesn't have Lee O. in his collection. Therefore, Fender Tucker may be the only source.

Commodore didn't exist in Brazil. At the time that Commodore computers were popular, Brazil was pretty much closed to imports. The Brazilian government at the time made it nearly impossible to import anything from outside of Brazil by imposing a 500%+ import tax.

I lived in Brazil in 1991-1992, and computers at that time in Brazil were still pretty much a rarity. The only ones I saw while I was there were cheap PC clones.

Fender responded today. Here is part of what he had to say:

For some reason I didn't include the COMPLEAT LEE O on the COMPLEAT LOADSTAR but all of his programs, including AUTO EXPENSE, are on the CD in the D64 and D81 files for each issue. [In other words, all of Lee O.'s programs are not collected in a group; you have to search each issue on the Compleat Loadstar CD for the Auto Expense program, or use the Loadstar Database to aid in the search.] So they're available.

I have a nearly-complete collection of Loadstar on original floppy disks. Does anyone here have access to the Loadstar Database? If so, could you tell me which issue Auto Expense is on?

I think I need to break down and just buy the CD from Fender.

Yeah, you'll get all of the Loadstar 128 issues and .pdf's of all the Loadstar Letters (that include some of my very first national articles, which I wrote especially for Loadstar).

Not to mention, who knows how much longer these floppy disks will really last... At least on a CD, the stuff is preserved for much longer.

Fender sent me a follow-up today. This is what he said:

"After what I wrote before, I checked out LOADSTAR COMPLEAT and in the folder called "Serious Stuff" there's the D81 versions of THE COMPLEAT LEE O. So the Commodorean doesn't have to hunt for the Clinton programs."
