Elite 128?

Was the 128 version of Elite a distinctly labeled product?

Going through the software which came with my new 128, I found a sealed copy of Elite hiding amidst some wordprocessors. It's a Firebird release labeled as being for "Commodore 64/128K", with no mention on the box of anything special when run on the 128. While unopened games hold no special appeal to me, I'd like to keep this one sealed since I'll be selling it.

There was no 128 version. The Elite128 you see floating around was done by a fan a few years ago - he disassembled the whole game and made many improvements.

Does anyone know if it actually runs in C128 mode or is it in C64 mode and accesses the extra memory of the 128 - (which is possible to do.)

It runs in 64 mode and uses the VBI to switch to the C128's fast mode.  Not sure it accesses any extra memory, but it does save some by removing cassette code.
