Greetings, C= and Ami comrades!
If you should be in the San Francisco area May 18-19, you are invited to the Bay Area 2013 Maker Faire at the San Mateo Events Center, 1346 Saratoga Dr., San Mateo, California.  Join the thousands and thousands of people who attend this annual event.  Maker Faire runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
This year is extra special, because Erik Klein of Vintage-Computer.com has invited other classic computerists to share his tables.  So, in the limited space that has been assigned for each computerist, the Fresno Commodore User Group will have an exhibit - a classic Commodore 64 system and a classic Amiga 2000 system.  Not only will we have games running on the systems for all to play, but we will also have the Relax Stress Reduction System for the C64 and the Haitex X Specs 3D Stereoscopic Glasses for the Amiga.  Expand your mind with these fun curiosities!
Who knows?!  I might be able to squeeze in a modded C64 DTV 30-games-in-one joystick and the ArcadeRetroGaming.com Multiple Classic Computer 216 (MCC-216).  And in the rest of the table space, Erik and others are bringing
in a HP 87 with disk drive and a paper tape punch, a modded Atari 400, a modded Amiga 600, and Apple II hardware.
You can find our Vintage Computers' tables in the Expo Hall.  For more information on the program and schedule, how to get there, a map of the venue, go to

          http://makerfaire.com

               Truly,
               Robert Bernardo

P.S. Catch Jeri Ellsworth as she wanders Maker Faire with a few new prototypes... !

Commodore User Groups / Next SCCAN meeting - Saturday, May 11
« on: May 06, 2013, 03:15 PM »
Greetings, C= and Ami comrades!
Our next meeting of the Southern California Commodore & Amiga Network is Saturday, May 11, 2 to 4+ p.m. at

          Panera Bread Restaurant
          19662 Nordhoff Street
          Northridge, California
          (818) 407-9400

I'll be bringing the Amiga 600, VIC-20, and the SX-64 and SuperCPU with games.  Also I'll be bringing a box of Commodore odds-and-ends donated by the former tech of the Fresno Commodore User Group... free stuff for anyone.
Because the Commodore Vegas Expo is coming on July 27-28, expect talk to center on that show (with more talk about Commodore and Amiga at the May 18-19 Maker Faire in San Mateo, at the June 1 SC3 Arcade Party in Santa Ana, and at the July 6 Atari Party 2013 in Davis).
Don't forget to bring any Amiga or Commodore items you wish to share!

          Speaking for SCCAN,

At some point, the 65SC02 needs to talk to the FDC Controller, so it bumps up to 4MHz, and then backs down to 2MHz to run the main chunk of code (most of the code is shared between the FD2K and the FD4K, and CMD would not have wanted to rewrite it to add double the delays for JD mode, and such, so I am sure they simply bumped the speed up part of the time.
Ah, very interesting.  I didn't know that it shifted back and forth between 2 MHz. and 4 MHz..

This sd2iec firmware seems to be used by such hardware as NKC sd2iec, C64SDV2.0 Infinity, and RETRO microIEC.  (Can anyone add to the list of hardware using sd2iec firmware?)
     There is the SD2IEC from

          http://sd2iec.co.uk

and the C64 SD from

          http://elektronika.vatera.hu/nosztalgia_keszulekek/egyeb/commodore_64_c64_sd_kartya_interfesz_1541_emu_1724658515.html

I should report on these newer SD2IEC manufacturers,

Commodore User Groups / Next FCUG meeting - Sunday, May 5
« on: April 29, 2013, 07:45 AM »
Happy Cinco de Mayo, C= and Ami aficionados!
The Fresno Commodore User Group has its next meeting from 11 a.m. to 1+ p.m., Sunday, May 5, at  --

       Bobby Salazar's Mexican Restaurant
2839 North Blackstone Ave. (corner of Blackstone and Michigan)
       Fresno, California

Note the date for this month's meeting; we had to change the meeting from our usual third Sunday of the month due to the May 18-19 Maker Faire (http://makerfaire.com/ ).  We will have a Commodore and Amiga exhibit at that fantastic event!
For May we concentrate on the PET 4032; we'll be checking various programs that work on the 40-column screen of the PET 4032.  We'll also delve more into the VIC-20 programs found on the Toronto PET User Group Library CD.  Finally, if we have time, we'll look at the C64 pictures and tunes which were entered in the compo at Gubbdata 2013 in Sweden.

Not to mention talk of CommVEx v9 2013,

Here's a deal.  A few minutes ago, one of our veteran CommVEx attendees reported that the Plaza Hotel -- situated across the street from the sister hotel and our CommVEx venue, the Vegas Club Hotel -- has a sale on accommodations.  See his message below

It might work for Vegas Club also.

Have to book before April 30th. I had to call to get it... the online system would not take the promo booking price.

If you are planning to come to the Commodore Vegas Expo v9 on July 27-28, now would be a good time to make those reservations by calling the Plaza at (800) 634-6575.

There's only one way to check about the differences: Someone who has an real FD-2000 board (with silver oscillator) and a spare ED disk drive have to solder in a socket for the floppy controller and add the new parts. So RobertB would be an ideal tester for it ;)
Heh, I don't have the skill to add a socket into my FD-2000s.
Quote
Can you compare the formatting speed of HD disk as one 1.6 MB native partition in the FD-2000 and the FD-4000? Maybe there's a speed difference between the floppy controllers and the 2 MHz / 4 MHz clock. As I tested, both devices were already in FD-4000 state. Use FD-Tools and a complete format. I started my stopwatch when the drive began and stopped it after the partition was created.

What happens if you connect the Teac ED drive to an unmodified FD-2000 and insert an ED disk?
I can try those experiments tomorrow.

Commodore User Groups / Next FCUG meeting - Sunday, April 21
« on: April 18, 2013, 12:38 PM »
Happy April, C= and Ami aficionados!
The Fresno Commodore User Group has its next meeting from 11 a.m. to 1+ p.m., Sunday, April 21, at  --

          Bobby Salazar's Mexican Restaurant
2839 North Blackstone Ave. (corner of Blackstone and Michigan)
          Fresno, California

This month we concentrate on the VIC-20.  In hardware I'll bring in the giant VC-1020 expander for the VIC-20, we'll look at the smaller Cardco Cardboard/3 Expansion Interface and the HesWare HesCard-20 5-Port Cartridge Expander for the VIC-20, and the MSD 24K RAM Expansion Memory for the VIC-20.
In the software part of our meeting, we'll try out the VIC-20 programs from the Jeff Daniels' disk, the Denial Archive.  If we can dig it out in time, we'll look at the VIC-20 programs on the TPUG Library CD.  We'll talk about chips (found a stash of them in storage), C= related videos, my visit to an astronomer who used a VIC-20 to record data from his telescope, and even the upcoming William Shatner Weekend at the end of this month.  Of course, we'll talk about the latest info about the July 27-28 Commodore Vegas Expo.

Herdware / Re: The Cosmos 128 Universal Tower Project
« on: April 18, 2013, 07:24 AM »
The problem is, I'm only good in planning and designing, but I can't realize my ideas, because I'm not good in mechanical and practical things.
Heh, the same as me.  :)  However, I'm much better at working on the mechanicals of classic cars.
Quote
I also made bad experiences in German C64 and Amiga forums, there are a lot of idiots.
     Aw, that is too bad.
Quote
The atmosphere here is better, and in a true C128 forum the interest of an universal C128 tower project is higher. And I know here are some guys who have the knowledge for that project.
Look at Vanessa Ezekowitz's C128 towers at

...I didn't found your pictures...
I just checked and found the photos to be missing.  I know that Dick Estel redid the website; perhaps he clipped off some of my photos off the computer festivals.
Quote
I just bought a Rockwell R65C02P4 like in the FD-4000 for 8,90 Euro including shipping...
From where did you buy a Rockwell 65C02?  When I needed a replacement Rockwell for the one in my Turbomaster CPU cartridge, I couldn't find one.  I had had to buy a WDC 65C02, which worked perfectly in the Turbomaster.
Quote
...it seems that it's best to format all unformatted ED disks as one native partition and create other partitions later.
     Good advice.
Quote
By the way, the Eprom sticker looks nice, hm? It's specially made with a DTP program and matches the original fonts and size...
Heh, I was wondering where those stickers came from.  :)
Quote
...I just found an older photo of the unmodified FD-2000's board here.
I'll see if I can take some board photos of my FD-2000 and 4000 tomorrow.  No more time today, because I had a long day at work.
Quote
@ Robert: If you have both an FD-2000 and an FD-4000, it would be a great possibility to make this rework again, because it's working even without an ED drive. But if you want to buy one, perhaps you may try another ED floppy.
It's not a priority for me to buy more ED mechanisms right now, because I already have spare Teac FD-235J mechanisms (just in case the mechs in my FD-4000s go bad).

I have sometimes heard that the FD-4000 should run on 4 MHz, but what is it all about?
CMD distributor Maurice Randall told me face-to-face at the Chicago Commodore Expo 2001 that the FD-4000 runs at 4 MHz.
Quote
What speed should have a FD-2000?
     2 MHz.
Quote
I formatted an ED disk native in 3,2 MB and it took 1:30 minutes on the original FD-4000 and my modified version.
Obviously, formatting speed is not affected by the faster processor in the FD-4000.
Quote
The boards of the FD-2000 and FD-4000 are identical, I didn't found any differences.
If you dig around http://www.dickestel.com/fcug.htm , I have a couple of photos there of the boards of my FD-2000 and my FD-4000.  The boards are different.

P.S. Hmm, usually for CommVEx I bring along a FD-2000 or FD-4000 but not both.  Perhaps I should exhibit both this year, and attendees could compare the differences.
